Aron Ra on Evolution, Creationism and the Importance of Scientific Thinking

Written Expert Q&A | The Freethinkers Alliance

Evolution is one of the most extensively supported theories in modern science. Yet it remains widely misunderstood and is frequently misrepresented in public discussions about science, religion, and education.

In this written Q&A with The Freethinkers Alliance, science communicator and author Aron Ra discusses the evidence supporting evolution, common misconceptions about the theory, and how people can distinguish scientific research from claims that merely sound scientific.

Drawing on his experience communicating science and challenging creationist arguments, Ra explains why examining original research, understanding the burden of proof, and learning how scientific knowledge is tested are essential parts of critical thinking.

1. Why is evolution such a well-supported scientific theory?

Aron Ra: Evolution is so well-supported simply because it is true.

The first evidence came from people learning that they could breed new varieties of dogs, cattle, poultry, and vegetables. Then Carl Linnaeus revealed a taxonomic hierarchy that resembles a family tree of all life.

Connections to the different branches of that family tree were subsequently revealed in the fossil record. The ages of geological periods were consistently confirmed through several methods, including multiple radioisotopes that corroborate the same geological ages indicated by the fossil record.

Finally, the interconnectedness of living organisms was confirmed genetically.

None of these lines of evidence could be as consistent as they are if evolution were not real. They all support and reinforce one another, providing overwhelming evidence for evolution and contradicting creationist explanations.

2. What are the most common misconceptions about evolution?

Aron Ra: Creationists are, I think, largely aware that theirs is a position of make-believe, where they have to arrive at a certain conclusion regardless of what the truth is. Many understand that what they pretend is not true, but they are determined to believe it anyway.

Some are smart enough to recognise that if they understood the science, they would accept it. So they misrepresent evolution as something it is not, cultivating the confusion on which their faith depends.

They twist the subject into its opposite. Evolution concerns whole populations over many generations, but creationists reduce it to one individual over a single lifetime. Evolution is an emergent aspect of population dynamics, but they pretend that individual animals somehow make these changes intentionally.

Evolution involves an ancestral population eventually diversifying into two or more distinct populations that may become genetically isolated sister groups while remaining closely related. Yet creationists misrepresent this as two species hybridising to produce a third, infertile species, or as one individual suddenly changing into something fundamentally different from its parents.

They use absurd examples to illustrate this misunderstanding. Kent Hovind, for instance, has suggested scenarios such as hamsters growing out of a corn stalk. Ray Comfort has described a lump of meat sitting around for millions of years before suddenly turning into a dog, which would then need to find another lump of meat that had become a female dog at the same time.

In many cases, we can show how apologists deliberately misrepresent scientific explanations to mislead people. I think it is literally accurate and appropriate to describe such religious apologists as professional liars.

3. How can someone distinguish scientific evidence from claims that merely use scientific-sounding language?

Aron Ra: Read the original peer-reviewed articles.

Creationists usually refuse to cite their sources. On the occasional instance when they claim a particular study supports their argument, reading the study yourself often reveals that it does not say what they claim. Usually, it says the very opposite.

4. What are some effective ways to respond to creationist or pseudoscientific arguments without allowing the discussion to become unnecessarily hostile?

Aron Ra: The people pretending to know what they are talking about hate nothing more than the burden of proof.

Demand that they demonstrate the truth of their claims and provide the sources behind them. If you are discussing science, they need to cite a scientific study rather than simply quoting a highlighted verse from the Bible.

5. Why is understanding how scientific knowledge is developed and tested just as important as knowing scientific facts?

Aron Ra: Because science is an investigation, not a belief.

It does not matter what you believe. What matters is why you believe it. Is your reason good enough that we should consider your claim true?

6. What role should scientific literacy and critical thinking play in public education?

Aron Ra: In Europe, there is some scientific literacy in education, but not enough. In Asia, there is more, as there should be. But in Africa and the United States? Especially now? There is none at all. That is disastrous for us all.

7. How can communicators encourage people to reconsider deeply held beliefs while keeping discussions constructive?

Aron Ra: I say we should expose the overt dishonesty of faith. Call out every lie for what it is and show how the person making the claim never admits when they have been proven wrong.

Because they already knew they were wrong, and it did not matter to them.

8. What advice would you give to young people who want to learn more about evolution and develop stronger critical-thinking skills?

Aron Ra: I can no longer recommend standard education, but I can recommend certain teachers: Erica Gibbon, Forest Valkai, myself, and Donald Prothero.
